چکیده

An understanding of the limit on potential predictability is crucial for developing appropriate tools for extended-range prediction of active/break spells of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM). The global low-frequency changes in climate modulate the annual cycle of the ISM and can influence the intrinsic predictability limit of the ISM intraseasonal oscillations (ISOs). Using 104-year (1901–2004) long daily rainfall data, the change in potential predictability of active and break spells are estimated by an empirical method. It is found that the potential predictability of both active and break spells have undergone a rapid increase during the recent three decades. The potential predictability of active spells has shown an increase from one week to two weeks while that for break spells increased from two weeks to three weeks. This result is interesting and intriguing in the backdrop of recent finding that the potential predictability of monsoon weather has decreased substantially over the same period compared to earlier decades due to increased potential instability of the atmosphere. The possible role of internal dynamics and external forcing in producing this change has been explored. The changes in energy exchange between the synoptic and ISO scale and the different ISO modes as evidenced by energetics computations in frequency domain also support the increased potential predictability of ISO. Our finding provides optimism for improved and useful extended-range prediction of monsoon active and break spells. Copyright c © 2010 Royal Meteorological Society

Empirical Prediction and Predictability of Dry and Wet Spells of the Indian Summer Monsoon

Prediction of the active (rainy) and break (dry) phases of the Indian summer monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (ISO’s) two to threeweeks in advance is of great importance for food production and water management of the country, but is currently unavailable. Potential predictability inherent in the quasi-periodic nature of the monsoon ISO’s is estimated from daily rainfall and circulation data ...

Potential predictability and extended range prediction of Indian summer monsoon breaks

[1] Extended range prediction (two to three weeks in advance) of Indian summer monsoon active (rainy) and break (dry) phases are of great importance for agricultural planning and water management. Using daily rainfall and circulation data for 23 years, a fundamental property of the monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (ISO’s) is discovered and shown that the potential predictability limit ( 20 da...

Summer precipitation determinant factors of Iran's South-East

Indian Ocean is known as a source of moisture for southeast of Iran due to summer precipitation. In this study, in order to investigate the role of SST of Indian Ocean, and the convergence and divergence fields in the precipitation of southeast of Iran, precipitation data of five synoptic stations were used during 2000-2010, including Iranshahr, Khash, ChahBahar, Zabul, and Saravan. To investig...

Downscaling summer rainfall in the UK from North Atlantic ocean temperatures

Annual series of three stochastic rainfall model parameters — the seasonal wet day amount (or intensity), the conditional dry–day probability (or dry–spell persistence), and the conditional wet-day probability (or wet-spell persistence) — were examined using daily rainfall records for ten UK stations for the period 1901–1995. The purpose was first, to determine the extent to which these indices...

A synoptic study on seasonal patterns of wet and dry spells in midwest of Iran

The effective patterns and mechanisms of synoptic systems during the wet and dry spells in Midwest of Iran(MWI) analyzed and discussed on seasonal scales from 1974 to 2003. Synoptic Analysis is based on synoptic chartson Sea Level Pressure (SLP), 850 and 500 Hpa levels. The results of synoptic analysis show that dry spells in MWIare mostly corresponded to Azores High (AZH) intensifying and its ...
